What to Expect
First Two Weeks
Expect to hit the ground running, the professors typically expect 60-80 hours of work per week (including class time). But, the first two weeks will keep you busy with some exciting events to help you get to know your classmates and many of the firms in Calgary. Your days are spent in the books and your nights are spent networking. It can be a very hectic time but enjoyable nonetheless.
Late September to the End of October
Following Orientation, most of the academic focus for first year students is directed at providing a foundation for the rest of your studies. Case briefing, synthesizing, memo writing, and moots will become part of your day to day lingo. Many first year students also take advantage of a luxury of the Calgary legal market and that is first year summer employment. The social networking events and career fairs will begin in earnest and, for a select few, they will have ironed out a summer job before any law school marks come out.
Remainder of the Fall Term
Exam preparation... the Drafting Assignment... and all the joys and stress that come with your first foray into law school exams. The Great Humble
Once your marks are in, usually mid-January, the remainder of the year involves the Fundamental Legal Skills Research exam, Legal Perspectives Assignment, your factum/moot (this time for marks), and the mad-scramble to prepare for finals. Hopefully, by this time, you've figured out exactly what is necessary to survive.
