Housing
The City of Calgary is divided into four quadrants with the University of Calgary located in the NorthWest quadrant. The city boasts a light rail transit system (C-Train) with two lines that intersect downtown. The University has its own stop which is approximately a five minute walk to the Murray Fraser Building.
On-Campus
The on-campus housing is coordinated by the Residence, Food, & Catering department at the University of Calgary and you can visit their homepage here.
Applicants that are enrolled at the University of Calgary are typically placed in the Graduate Student buildings to ensure an environment conducive to studying. Family housing options on-campus are available as well and current rates range from $925 to $1050 per month depending on student needs and the building they have been assigned.
The residence buildings are an approximate five minute walk to the Murray Fraser Building and about a ten minute walk to the C-Train.
Off-Campus
For those interested in living off-campus who are out of town the ultimate resource to find housing is RentFaster. While searching the map it is much easier to know the district(s) that you would prospectively like to live in and a comprehensive district map is provided by the Calgary Real Estate Board.
The City of Calgary, like most metropolitan areas, developed outwards into the suburbs and the newer communities contain new homes that are almost the cost almost the same amount in montly rental as those close to campus. So, for a similar cost you can find an older home close to campus or a newer home at a distance.
Driving times from Tuscany and Hidden Valley are approximately 20 minutes in the summer and 30 minutes in the winter. You can always check out the neighborhoods using Google Street View via Google Maps.
Immediately in front of the Murray Fraser Building is a bus loop where 4 different routes stop. Make sure to check the Transit section as you may be able to find a home close enough to a stop that you can get a easy ride to campus.
A common question asked is in regards to where possible unsafe locations may be in the city. We would invite you to look at the Calgary Crime Map to make your own determination but as a general rule most troublesome areas are quite a distance from campus and shouldn't be much of a worry unless you look for a house far from the University.
