Hi, Hello, Salaam, Marhaba! On behalf of the Society of Law Student (SLS), welcome to UCalgary Law!
The SLS is the official student association recognized by the Faculty of Law to represent the interests of all students in the undergraduate law program.
We are responsible for providing law students with social, sporting, academic, volunteer, and administrative services. We also function as an official liaison between the student body and the Faculty, University, and broader legal community. We organize and host a series of events and activities throughout the year, including, but not limited to: Orientation week, the Halloween mixer, a curling tournament, ski trip, intramural sports, law show, the BDP Cup Hockey Tournament, Law Formal, and graduation. Our job is to ensure that you survive the trials and tribulations of law school while at the same time making memories that will last a lifetime. I strongly encourage you to attend as many of the events as you can. These events will help you make the most out of your three short years in Law school.
Here are the answers to the questions I get asked most often:
Yes, you can pet him. He is very friendly.
His name is Marcus.
No, he is not a golden retriever. He is a mix of many different breeds but no, I don’t know which ones. My guess is Pyrenees, Greyhound, and Collie among others.
He is 5 years old. I got him from the SPCA when he was a puppy.
Thanks, he is handsome, beautiful, awesome and super chill.
No, you cannot steal him.
Role on the SLS:
As your VP C.R.E.A.M., my responsibilities are mainly transactional (making sure money goes in and out) and compliance (record keeping and annual reporting to the SU) related. But to go above and beyond I help the other SLS members with event budgeting (break even analysis) and implementing best practices (improving internal processes/controls, acceptance of e-Transfers).
Previous work experience includes:
Interim Financial Controller for a small Private Equity Mortgage Brokerage
Auditor for an International Accounting Firm
Coiled Tubing Lead Operator for an International Oilfield Services Company
I have two degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and had to jump through a lot of stubble to get here. Aside from school and walking my dog, I’m into sports, live music, keeping my old truck running and subtly making old school hip-hop references.
Hi! I am your VP Academic for 2018/2019.
I am a third year law student. In 2011 I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of Calgary. I have been an avid participant in many of the intramural sports that the SLS organizes. This includes being the worst player on the volleyball team and an average player on the hockey team. I am dreadfully afraid of heights and embrace that fear while downhill skiing. I also enjoy playing ping pong, hockey and talking all of the time.
Hey everyone! I am you 3L Representative for 2018-2019. Last year I served as the VP Events with the SLS. I was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta and I am a graduate of Queen’s University. I have an Honours Bachelor Degree in Global Development and French Literature. At Queen’s, I played for the Women’s Varsity Volleyball team for four years. After graduating, I worked at the Clinton Foundation in New York City. When my visa expired I moved back home. I love my dogs, skiing, the Dark Knight, HBO, and puffy Cheetos.
I am the VP Stu for the SLS.
Outside of school I will usually be found playing hockey, soccer, slopitch, swimming, cycling, or golfing.
I am the VP Marketing for the SLS. I look after marketing, website and merchandise for the SLS. I am also the marketing executive for the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers - Western Chapter.
I have a business degree from McMaster University. Before law school, I was a Trade Officer for the Korea Trade Commission where I specialized in market expansion and strategy development. I also worked for Rogers Communications, Hewlett-Packard, Kyocera Communications, and Deloitte.
Hi! I am the VP Administration for 2018/2019.
Hi Guys! I am really excited to be your VP EVents for this year. My role is to assist with the planning and coordination of all of the SLS events and basically to make sure that we have some wicked parties! I am a born and raised Calgarian but completed my B.Comm up North at the U of A. I then decided I missed the mountains and moved back to Calgary where I worked in Human Resources and then HR consulting for about 3 years. I come to you with a variety of event planning experiences – my first job out of undergrad was in marketing where event planning was literally my day job. I am also basically a professional bridesmaid at this point (5x and counting!) so lets just say I have planned a few parties in my day. I am a retired cheerleader, love to run and hike and am obsessed with baking. I love meeting people so please don’t hesitate to say hi if you see me around! NOTE: I am also constantly looking for running buddies so if you run hit me up!
Hello everyone! The Society of Law Students is your faculty government and is here to serve you! As your 2L representative, I will be making sure that second year voices and issues are heard within the SLS. My goals for the year are to further the already amazing team atmosphere within our class (friends!!!) and to be a strong advocate for any 2L issues that arise throughout the year. I am also excited to help our amazingly talented VP events Victoria provide you with some fun and fresh times! I was born and raised in Calgary, but have called several places home. I played junior hockey in Chilliwack, BC and then Dauphin, MB, before heading east to do my undergrad at Queen’s (CHA GHEILL!). I chose U of C law because even through all my travels, Calgary remained home and I needed to reunite with family, friends, Stampede, and the mountains! I look forward to serving as your 2L rep and to getting to know all of you more. If you have any questions or concerns (or just want to say hi!) please feel free to stop me in the halls of MFH!
Hello everyone! I am the SLS 1L events rep for the 2018-2019 year. My role is essentially to help Vic plan and promote events, and peer pressure all of the 1Ls into having fun.
I was born and raised in Calgary, and I have a political science degree from the University of Calgary, although I did the first two years of my degree at the University of Toronto. I played varsity fastball throughout my entire undergrad, including competing in 3 national championships. Now I'm an average (but overly competitive) slow-pitch player, and I'm a very mediocre intramural volleyball player. Feel free to find me in the halls of MFH or drop me a message if you have any questions or concerns!
Hi I am your 1L Rep for 2018-2019!
